MTB training checklist

Training on your mtb demands close attention to your bike as training in dirt, water and mud wears the chain, chainrings and your brake pads.

MTB training in the woods is a great distraction from the hilly windy roads.

Training on mtb winter is a really good distraction from road training. Especially the technical parts of a single track gives you a greater ability to control your bike and you can take theese skills with you on to your shiny racing bike.

On the mtb, it is almost inevitable that you are unfortunate enough to bend or break something, either a crash or a branch can quickly make a wheel misaligned, your gear get destroyed or your chain might break.

Here I list up what you need to remember and what things you should prepare yourself for before you go on training ride in the woods on your mtb.

MTB TRAINING CHECKLIST:

  1. Keep your helmet on. Crashes are almost inevitable if you challenge yourself a little in the woods

  2. Train preferably together with others. When a crash happens or another accidents happen, it's always nice to be two to solve the problem

  3. Keep your mobile phone in your back pocket. This to ensure that you can get help if it goes all wrong, eg. after a crash

  4. 2 mtb bicycle tubes, or foam which laps the hole from the inside

  5. Bicycle Pump (for mtb bicycle tubes!), Or gas cartridges (remember to make a test on a puncture at home, so you're confident in using this device)

  6. Insert puncture resistant rim tape on the outside of the tube which reduces the risk of punctures

  7. Hex key set, if something goes loose or if you need to adjust something

  8. A Mountain Biking can run in all kinds vejr

  9. Chain tool. Remember to buy one with a relatively large handle, because when you are out in the wood on a cold autumn day, with sweat dripping down from the tip of your nose and having cold muddy fingers, then the small handle bar is incredibly difficult to use

  10. Check the rubber on the brake pads and adjust before riding

  11. Adjust tire pressure depending on the weather and the terrain you are about to ride. Ask any one you know who has experience in this area. Unlike the road racing bike, it is usually not the best solution to pump max air in MTB tires! General rule of thumb is to get a preasure close to 2.5-3 bar when it is very muddy and 3-4 bar when it is dry

  12. Spoke adjustment tool - practice aT home on how to use it so you have the skill needed to handle a break of a spoke

  13. Water and energy bars

Depending on the weather

Sunglasses when the sun shines or yellow/red/clear lenses when it rains or it's cloudy-

Clothes

Shoes with cleats is highly recommended. Also shoe covers and gloves must be considered due to the weather conditions.

MTB bike gloves are also recommended as mud, rain and sweat makes the grip on the handlebars less firm.

Always wash your mtb after training. Dry the chain with a cloth and lubricate chain, gears and other moving parts carefully. This will make your mtb ready for your next ride.
